My mother’s panicked voice on the other end: “Your father is having chest pain. I don’t know what to do.”

We live in Mumbai. My parents are in Pune – nearly 200 kilometers away.

In those terrifying moments, your mind goes blank. Call 108? Will they come quickly enough? Which hospital is closest? How do we coordinate from so far away?

Then I remembered our Saahaay membership. With shaking hands, I dialed their emergency number.

“Sir, we have your father’s location and medical history on file,” the representative said calmly. “We’re dispatching an ambulance from the nearest equipped hospital immediately. Stay on the line.”

Within 8 minutes – 8 minutes! – the ambulance was at my parents’ door. The paramedics were briefed about Papa’s condition even before they arrived.

But here’s what made the real difference: the Saahaay representative didn’t disappear once the ambulance left.

She called me every 30 minutes with updates. “Your father has reached the hospital. The cardiac team is ready.” Then, “The ECG is done. Doctor says it’s a mild heart attack, but he’s stable.” Later, “He’s been admitted. Room number 203. Here’s the doctor’s direct number.”

When we finally reached Pune the next morning, we found Papa resting comfortably. The doctor told us, “Good thing you acted so quickly. Another hour’s delay could have been dangerous.”

My mother, who had been alone and scared just hours earlier, had been in constant touch with both the hospital staff and Saahaay throughout the night. She never felt abandoned.

The Saahaay representative enquired about Papa in the hospital the next day, just to check on him personally. That’s when it hit me – this isn’t just an emergency service. It’s like having family everywhere.

Papa is completely fine now, back to his morning walks and cricket commentary debates. But I shudder to think what might have happened if we had to figure everything out ourselves in those crucial first hours.

Distance used to scare me. Now it doesn’t. Because I know Saahaay has our back, wherever we are.

Some things in life are truly priceless. Peace of mind is one of them.

It was 2 AM when my phone rang.
